Bulgaria: Thousands Demand Government Resignation Amid Corruption Claims
Tens of thousands of Bulgarians have once again demonstrated against the country’s pro-Western government, with predominantly young participants demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Zhelyaskov and his cabinet in Sofia and numerous other locations. The minority government is scheduled to face its sixth no-confidence vote in parliament this year. The protest wave began two weeks prior, initially against a draft budget for the upcoming year, which has since been withdrawn by the cabinet. Current criticisms are now directed at allegations of corruption, particularly involving the leader of the DPS party, a group whose support the Bulgarian minority government relies upon. These ongoing protests take place as Bulgaria prepares for the scheduled introduction of the Euro on January 1st.
