EU Freezes Russian Assets Indefinitely to Support Ukraine

The European Union has decided to freeze Russian assets indefinitely, a move that was supported by all member states except Hungary and Slovakia. This decision was made under Article 122 of the EU Treaty, allowing for a qualified majority vote in cases of serious economic issues. Previously, the freezing of assets worth 210 billion euros required unanimous agreement every six months. The indefinite freeze aims to facilitate a planned EU loan of up to 165 billion euros to Ukraine. EU leaders are set to meet next week to discuss further details, including guarantees for Belgium, which is concerned about potential legal actions from Moscow.
