Tens of Thousands Protest in Budapest Over Child Abuse Scandal, Demand Orban’s Resignation
Around 50,000 people demonstrated in Budapest following the revelation of widespread abuse cases in Hungarian state-run children’s and youth institutions. A government report from 2021, published by the opposition on Friday, identified approximately 3,000 suspected cases of abuse. Critics accuse the government of withholding this report. Protesters called for Prime Minister Viktor Orban to resign amidst growing political pressure ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for April. Current polls indicate opposition leader Peter Magyar’s Tisza party leads over Orban’s Fidesz party. The large turnout reflects public outrage over the handling of abuse allegations in state facilities.
