European Green Party MEP Sergey Lagodinsky has warned against excessive optimism following the recent release of 123 political prisoners in Belarus. Despite this development, Lagodinsky emphasized that the situation in Belarus remains dire, with thousands still detained. He pointed out that Belarusian leader Lukashenko continues to support Russia’s war against Ukraine and attempts to destabilize European countries.

Lagodinsky stressed the importance of the EU maintaining sanctions against Belarus. Nonetheless, he acknowledged that negotiations with Minsk are both necessary and appropriate. Among those released are prominent opposition figures Maria Kolesnikowa and Viktor Babariko, who were involved in mass protests and opposition activities following the disputed 2020 presidential election.
