Ex-Ministers Scheuer and Wissing Testify on Rahmede Bridge Collapse Inquiry

Former German transport ministers Andreas Scheuer and Volker Wissing are scheduled to testify before the NRW state parliament’s investigative committee concerning the deteriorating infrastructure highlighted by the closure of the Rahmede Valley Bridge. The bridge, a critical component of the heavily used Sauerland route A 45 between Dortmund and Aschaffenburg, was urgently closed in 2021 due to safety concerns and subsequently demolished in 2023 for a complete rebuild.

The committee, titled “Bridge Disaster and Infrastructure Backlog,” aims to examine the communication between the transport ministry and the state government to determine how the crisis developed. Challenges include accusations against current Minister President Wüst, formerly NRW’s transport minister, for delaying necessary renovations. The redirection of traffic has significantly impacted the nearby Lüdenscheid region. Testimonies will also include former State Secretary Luksic and NRW’s State Chancellery chief Liminski. A partial reopening of the new structure is expected in the coming week.
