EU Parliament approves safeguard mechanism for Mercosur trade deal

The European Parliament in Strasbourg voted in favor of a safeguard mechanism allowing the EU to reinstate tariffs if imports of specific products from Mercosur countries, such as beef and sugar, cause price drops in the EU market. This measure aims to protect European farmers from increased competition following the trade agreement with Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

Parliament representatives must now negotiate the details of this safeguard with the Council of the 27 EU member states within a tight timeframe. The agreement is scheduled to be signed on Saturday, but some countries including France demand stronger protection for their agricultural sector and suggest postponing the deal until next year. The final decision is expected at the upcoming EU summit on Thursday. Additionally, the Parliament approved a softened version of the supply chain law, delaying certain regulations and reducing obligations for companies.
