Commission for Ukraine War Damage Compensation Established in The Hague
An international commission to assess compensation claims for damages caused by Russia in Ukraine has been established in The Hague. The European Council oversees the commission, which allows individuals, organizations, and public institutions to file claims. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended the founding conference and emphasized the need to hold Russia accountable for its crimes.
Since 2023, war damage claims in Ukraine have been recorded in a registry based on a UN resolution. Approximately 80,000 claims have been filed so far. The total war damages are now estimated to be in the triple-digit billions. This initiative aims to provide a formal mechanism for victims to seek reparations for the extensive destruction caused by the conflict.
