Sydney attacker charged in 59 counts including terrorism and murder
The surviving attacker from the Bondi Beach shooting in Sydney has been charged with a total of 59 offenses, including terrorism and murder, according to police. The 24-year-old was shot by security forces during the attack and recently woke from a coma, with his first interrogation scheduled for today.
The attack occurred on Sunday during the Jewish festival of Hanukkah, when the man and his father opened fire on the crowd, killing 15 people and injuring many more. The father, aged 50, was shot dead by police at the scene. Authorities confirmed that both men had links to the terrorist organization Islamic State. Meanwhile, questions arose in Australian media about why the father was granted a firearms license in 2023 despite the son being under anti-terror investigations since 2019.
Additionally, New Year’s Eve celebrations at Bondi Beach have been cancelled in response to the terrorist attack. Organizers and the local council stated it was not an appropriate time for festivities given the tragic events.
