Is the Fur on the Hood Useful or Nonsense?

To protect yourself from cold, wind, rain, and snow during winter, besides scarves, hats, and gloves, a well-insulated winter jacket is essential. Many jackets feature a hood with a fur trim designed to protect the delicate skin on the face.

TikTok user Jessica Alzamora posted a video on December 14 claiming that the fur should be tucked inside the hood for better protection. She stated that this is not for style but functionality, suggesting the fur should cover the ears and block the air.

Comments showed mixed reactions, with some users surprised by this information and others disagreeing. Some pointed out that the fur is meant to be worn outside the hood for a reason, citing indigenous peoples like the Inuit who have traditionally worn jackets this way.

A 2004 US study indicates that hoods without fur lose heat through the face more quickly, while fur-lined hoods reduce heat loss and protect the face better. Natural fur is warmer because it creates a thicker insulating air layer compared to synthetic fur.

Experts explain that the fur trim design has been known for thousands of years by the Inuit as the most effective against wind and cold.
