    1200 Dead and Missing in Central Mediterranean in 2025

    Rome – At least 1190 people have died or are missing on the central Mediterranean route up to December 20, 2025, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Libya reported in a recent update on platform X.

    According to the UN agency, 26,635 migrants were intercepted at sea and returned to Libya during the same period, including 23,126 men, 2,336 women, and 965 minors.

    The central Mediterranean route remains one of the most dangerous migration routes worldwide.

    Since the beginning of 2025, 65,906 migrants have arrived in Italy by sea, the Ministry of Interior in Rome stated, compared to 65,472 in the same period in 2024 and 153,677 in 2023.

    Most migrants arriving in Italy this year come from Bangladesh, Egypt, and Eritrea.
