Israeli President Accepts Invitation to Sydney After Attack

Following the attack on a Jewish festival in Sydney, Israeli President Isaac Herzog has accepted an invitation to visit Australia, according to his spokesperson.

Herzog is expected to undertake the trip “as soon as possible,” the president’s office said.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese informed Herzog of the invitation during a phone call, expressing deep shock over the terrorist attack against the Jewish community in Australia.

During the conversation, Herzog emphasized the utmost importance of implementing all necessary legal measures to counter the dangerous and unprecedented rise in antisemitism, extremism, and jihadist terrorism.

The attack occurred on December 14 at Bondi Beach in Sydney during the Jewish festival of Hanukkah, resulting in 15 deaths.

The two attackers, a father and his son, had meticulously planned the attack over several months, and Australian authorities believe they were influenced by the ideology of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group.
