France Budget Dispute: Special Law Passes First Hurdle in National Assembly
In response to the ongoing budget dispute in France, the National Assembly unanimously approved a special law designed to extend the current state budget into the beginning of the next year. This measure aims to prevent administrative paralysis, ensuring government operations continue smoothly. The law now requires approval from the Senate later in the evening to be fully enacted. Expectations are high that the Senate will also pass the law. Previously, a mediation committee failed to reach a compromise on the budget. Discussions regarding the regular budget for 2026 are expected to resume in January. France currently faces a record national debt of 3.5 trillion euros, equivalent to 117 percent of its GDP.
