Wadephul urges strong US security guarantees for Ukraine amid peace talks

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized the necessity of solid security guarantees from the West, particularly the United States, for Ukraine amid ongoing peace negotiations. He stated that Ukraine would only be willing to consider concessions, including territorial ones, if backed by credible security promises from Western allies. Wadephul also highlighted the importance of unity within NATO and a capable German military to ensure European security. He warned against being complacent if a ceasefire is achieved, noting that Russia’s claimed readiness to negotiate is not true peace willingness. The minister stressed that supporting Ukraine is in Europe’s own security interest, as a stable Ukraine benefits the continent. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius previously indicated Russia could be capable of attacking NATO territory as early as 2028 or 2029. Although ongoing talks involve the US, Ukraine, and Russia, a ceasefire remains uncertain.
