Last-Minute Gift with Impact: Buying Land for Nature Conservation

Some people already have everything and wish for nothing, especially nothing “unnecessary.” Making them happy at Christmas is particularly difficult, but doing something good in their name could be an option.

The Naturschutzbund has been buying natural areas for decades to preserve them as survival islands for native animals and plants.

So far, 2,250 nature oases covering more than 1,700 hectares have been secured for endangered species through purchase or lease.

The ‘Nature Buyout’ campaign protects not only plants and animals but also permanently prevents land from being built over.

The organization is currently collecting donations to buy six more areas in Burgenland, Styria, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, and Carinthia.

These areas include a meadow in St. Michael with species listed as endangered, and ecologically valuable sites in Neurath and St. Ägidi.

Where purchase is not possible, the Naturschutzbund secures long-term leases to maintain and manage the habitats properly.

Volunteers help maintain these areas by clearing bushes, creating amphibian ponds, mowing meadows by hand, and restoring natural watercourses.

Spending time together caring for these areas could also be a meaningful gift supporting biodiversity.
