MTV Germany to Cease Broadcasting Music Videos
MTV Germany will stop broadcasting music videos, with the last one airing in the early morning hours of January 1. This marks the end of an era for TV entertainment in the German-speaking region, as the channel, launched in 1997 as MTV Central, was once a primary source for music videos.
The channel’s programming will now primarily feature reality shows, docu-soaps, and clip shows, which already constitute a significant portion of its schedule. Special music video programming like “MTV 80s,” “MTV 90s,” and “MTV 00s” will have their final broadcasts on December 31 between 10:00 and 12:45, with a last “MTV Unplugged” scheduled for primetime.
Over decades, MTV was crucial for debuting new music videos and helping both international and German-speaking artists, such as Rammstein and Tokio Hotel, gain prominence. The channel also served as a launchpad for presenters like Mirjam Weichselbraun, Anastasia Zampounidis, Joko Winterscheidt, and Klaas Heufer-Umlauf.
