Zelenskyy to Meet Trump Amid Peace Efforts, Donbas Central to Talks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed a meeting with US President Donald Trump on Sunday to discuss security guarantees and territorial questions, as efforts intensify for a peace agreement with Russia. Zelenskyy stated that “much can still be decided before the new year.”
The meeting follows discussions between Zelenskyy and Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner, who had previously negotiated with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. Zelenskyy indicated that a 20-point peace plan is 90 percent complete, but sensitive issues like territorial cessions require head-of-state discussion.
According to the Russian newspaper Kommersant, Russian President Vladimir Putin is open to negotiations but insists on Russia’s full control of the Donbas region. Putin reportedly told business leaders on December 24 that Russia remains committed to concessions made at an August summit with Trump in Anchorage, reiterating “The Donbas belongs to us.”
The Kommersant report also mentioned discussions about a joint Russian-American administration for the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and US interest in crypto-mining near the facility.
