Ex-Malaysian PM Najib Sentenced to Additional 15 Years for 1MDB Fraud

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for his involvement in the misappropriation of over 560 million US dollars from the state investment fund 1MDB. The Supreme Court found the 72-year-old guilty of abuse of power and ordered him to pay a fine equivalent to approximately 2.8 billion US dollars. Failure to pay the fine would lead to an extension of his sentence by at least ten more years. Najib served as Malaysia’s Prime Minister from 2009 to 2018 and is required to serve this new sentence after completing a six-year prison term related to a previous 1MDB case involving about 10 million US dollars from SRC International, a former 1MDB subsidiary. The ruling was announced on December 26, 2025.
