German Municipal Association Expects Regulations for Syrian Professionals’ Residency
The German Municipal Association anticipates government measures to allow Syrian professionals to remain in Germany, irrespective of conditions in Syria.
Christian Schuchardt, the association’s managing director, noted that many Syrian refugees have integrated into the German labor market, particularly in sectors facing acute skill shortages. He emphasized the economic rationale for retaining these individuals, suggesting that regulations should permit their continued residency if they are well-integrated and in demand. Currently, approximately 320,000 Syrians are employed in Germany, with over 266,000 in positions contributing to social security. Chancellor Friedrich Merz has indicated a goal for 80% of the 900,000 Syrians in Germany to return to Syria within three years, acknowledging the complexity of this objective.
