Heavy rainfall across southern Germany has brought temporary relief to the historic low-water levels of the Rhine River, enabling several ferry services to resume operations after weeks of suspension. Key routes in cities like Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Bad Honnef in North Rhine-Westphalia, as well as Kaub in Rhineland-Palatinate, are now functioning again. Despite this progress, restrictions remain in place for certain ferries, which are unable to transport larger vehicles such as motorhomes due to persistently low water levels.

The extensive damage caused by the heatwave has had a significant economic impact, with transportation across the Rhine heavily disrupted. The city of Leverkusen, for instance, reported financial losses of approximately 30,000 euros due to a ferry service shutdown connecting Cologne. Operators of goods ships have also faced major setbacks, with cargo vessels currently running at only 20% of their usual capacity. The shift away from waterways has led to increased reliance on trucks and trains, driving up logistics costs. Some regions have relaxed regulations, such as lifting Sunday and holiday bans on truck transport, to minimize disruptions.

While recent rainfall has slightly improved conditions, experts warn that full recovery may still be weeks away. Water levels at key locations like Kaub have risen from critical lows of six centimeters in August to 46 centimeters, but this remains far below the standard needed for smooth ship navigation. Industry leaders suggest that more consistent rainfall in September and October will be crucial to restoring normal operations on one of Europe’s essential transport arteries.
