In a shocking revelation, the Dutch government has admitted to years of severe abuse occurring within youth care centers and juvenile justice facilities under its jurisdiction. Health and Justice Secretary Mirjam Sterk issued a formal apology to the victims and their families, acknowledging the government’s failure to provide a safe and supportive environment for adolescents aged 12 to 18, who often face significant mental health challenges and behavioral issues. Sterk’s statement highlighted that instead of receiving care, many children were subjected to physical, mental, and sexual abuse. Over the past decade, thousands of minors have reportedly endured brutal treatment in these institutions, including prolonged isolation in locked rooms and physical restraints. The extent of the abuse was brought to light in a report submitted by researcher Jason Bhagwandas in 2024, which compiled testimonies from 51 victims.
