18-Year-Old Earns Up to €3,000 Monthly Selling Socks Amid Bürgergeld Benefits
Lea, an 18-year-old from Büdingen, Hessen, featured in the Bürgergeld documentary “Armes Deutschland,” has found an unconventional way to generate income by selling worn socks online, reportedly earning up to €3,000 monthly. Despite receiving around €580 in state benefits plus rent coverage from the Jobcenter, she and her partner Renee (21), who refuses to work, do not disclose this side income to authorities. Lea openly admits to manipulating the system and considers traditional employment, especially minimum wage jobs, unrewarding and physically taxing. Renee also expresses a preference for living off welfare rather than working long hours. Their story highlights challenges within the German social welfare system and is part of an older episode originally aired on RTL2 and available on RTL+.
