At Least 12 Dead in Sydney Terror Attack on Jewish Community, PM Says

Australian Prime Minister Albanese has classified the deadly attack in Sydney, which left at least twelve people dead, as a terror assault targeting the Jewish community. The incident occurred at Bondi Beach during the first day of the Chanukah festival, where many families had gathered. Two assailants opened fire; one was killed and the other arrested. Video footage shows a passerby disarming one of the attackers, an act praised by politicians as likely preventing further casualties.

The attack sparked international condemnation. UN Secretary-General Guterres, Israel’s President Herzog, and European Commission President von der Leyen expressed their outrage and support for Australia and Jewish communities worldwide. In Germany, Chancellor Merz and Jewish leaders condemned the hate crime, emphasizing the need to combat antisemitism and protect Jewish life. Various German officials pledged solidarity and actions to visibly support Jewish communities in the aftermath of the attack.
