Bavaria’s Christmas Markets Are Safe, Says Interior Minister Herrmann
Following the arrest of five terror suspects in the Dingolfing area, Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann assured the public that Christmas markets in Bavaria remain safe to attend. The suspects, who originated from Morocco, Egypt, and Syria, are believed to have planned an Islamist attack using a car or truck. Herrmann emphasized that the security measures in place are mature and effective, allowing people to visit the markets without undue concern.
Herrmann also highlighted the importance of balancing security with practicality to ensure that festivals continue without prohibitive costs from enhanced precautions. The suspects, some of whom are skilled immigrants, are currently being interrogated while their mobile phones are examined. Herrmann did not confirm nor deny reports suggesting that a foreign intelligence service had provided a tip-off to Bavarian security authorities.
