BDI Study Highlights Potential for Recycling to Reduce Raw Material Imports
A recent study commissioned by the Federation of German Industries (BDI) indicates that recycling could replace 20 to 40 percent of raw material imports by 2045.
Currently, Germany relies on imports for nearly 100 percent of lithium, nickel, and rare earth elements. The study emphasizes that export restrictions, rising global demand, and geopolitical tensions significantly impact supply chains and competitiveness. BDI Managing Director Siegfried Lösch noted that a circular economy could mitigate critical dependencies and enhance value creation within Germany.
