Hackers have targeted Berlin’s state network in a major cyberattack, demanding a ransom while sensitive data continues to appear compromised. Authorities are investigating the full scope of the breach.

Berlin is grappling with one of its most significant cybersecurity incidents after hackers infiltrated the state’s network and issued a ransom demand. Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner confirmed the breach and stated that the government would not succumb to extortion attempts. The attack, which reportedly began in early August, may have led to the leakage of sensitive information, though the extent remains unclear.

Investigations led by the State Criminal Office and Berlin Public Prosecutor’s Office, in collaboration with federal security agencies, are underway to uncover the origins and scope of the attack. Additional forensics suggest data exfiltration dates back at least to August 7, targeting the traffic and urban development departments. As a precaution, these departments were disconnected from the broader network mid-August to prevent further damage.

Authorities are particularly concerned that personal data could be among the compromised information, though efforts are being made to secure critical systems. Interior Senator Iris Spranger assured the public that election-related infrastructure remains protected and unaffected by the breach. Digital Secretary Florian Hauer added that the incident represents the largest cyberattack Berlin has ever faced, underscoring the urgency to strengthen security across its networks.
