Bishop Bätzing Urges “Firewall” Against AfD, Calls for New Migration Narratives
Bishop Georg Bätzing, chairman of the German Bishops’ Conference, has urged politicians to maintain a “firewall” against the Alternative for Germany (AfD) for as long as possible. In an interview, Bätzing stated that if necessary, there should be the courage to form minority governments. He characterized the AfD’s völkisch nationalism as inhumane, warning that those the party seeks to attract would be the first to be negatively impacted if the AfD gained political responsibility. Bätzing also rejected the assertion that the church’s stances on migration policy align exclusively with The Left and Alliance 90/The Greens. He emphasized that the church shares common ground with the broad center of society, including the CDU and SPD. He called for new narratives surrounding migration, expressing concern that the term has become associated with fear. Bätzing concluded by stating that migration is necessary, but not “uninhibited.”
