China cuts tariffs on EU pork significantly, rates now between 4.9% and 19.8%

China’s Ministry of Commerce in Beijing has announced the final tariff rates on pork imports from the European Union, setting them between 4.9% and 19.8%, depending on the company. This marks a significant reduction from the provisional tariffs introduced in September, which were as high as over 60 percent. The Chinese government justified these tariffs by accusing the EU of dumping pork products at unfairly low prices into the Chinese market. However, observers interpret this tariff adjustment primarily as a response to the EU’s additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, which are currently under negotiation between the two sides. The revision reflects an ongoing trade dispute and attempts at negotiation between China and the EU over their respective trade barriers.
