In a bold declaration, Wolfram Weimer, the independent Cultural Minister of Germany, has labeled himself a ‘cultural warrior’ against the Alternative for Germany (AfD), asserting that the party poses a significant threat to the nation’s cultural heritage. Weimer emphasized the need for an intellectual and cultural approach to combat right-wing extremism, countering accusations from leftist critics who label him a conservative ideologue.

As the September 6 elections in Saxony-Anhalt approach, Weimer expressed his commitment to safeguarding the region’s cultural identity, particularly in light of the AfD’s rising influence. He warned that if the party emerges as the dominant force in the election, it could jeopardize the cultural landscape, particularly regarding the legacy of the Bauhaus movement, which he claims the AfD is directly connected to the Nazi regime’s historical persecution.

Weimer also highlighted the importance of continued financial support for the Bauhaus Foundation, regardless of the election outcome.
