Digital resilience in times of hate: How to protect yourself from extremism on social media
Our main public square today is no longer the marketplace – it is the smartphone screen. Through this screen, we follow the news, join discussions and, inevitably, run into hate speech and sometimes openly extremist content that justifies violence or dehumanises entire groups.

- generalise from individual crimes to entire populations.
- Deny extremists what they crave most: attention.
Many extremist accounts rely on provocation to grow. Even angry replies can boost their visibility. In clear-cut cases of incitement, the most effective early response is often: ignore + block + report. - Protect your circles.
When friends or relatives start sharing extremist or racist content, try to talk to them privately rather than attacking them in public comments. Share alternative information, fact-checks or stories that challenge the narrative. - Document serious cases.
