Germany saw a record number of domestic trips in 2025, driven by a sharp increase in business travel, while international travel declined significantly.

Germany experienced a surge in domestic travel in 2025, with multi-day trips within the country reaching an all-time high of 169 million, marking a 3.9% increase compared to the previous year. This figure also surpassed pre-pandemic levels from 2019 by 5%, according to official statistics.

The rise in domestic travel was largely attributed to a 10.5% increase in business trips, which totaled 41 million for the year. While professional travel nearly returned to pre-pandemic levels, private travel within Germany saw a slight decline of 2.9%, dropping to approximately 233 million trips. Overall, the total number of trips with overnight stays decreased by 1.1% to 274 million, driven by a significant reduction in international travel.

International trips from Germany fell sharply, with only 105 million trips abroad recorded in 2025, an 8.3% drop compared to the previous year. Italy remained the most popular foreign destination, accounting for 12.4% of all multi-day international trips, followed by Austria at 11.1% and Spain at 10.9%. France and the Netherlands rounded out the top five destinations. For all types of travel, cars continued to dominate as the preferred mode of transportation, used for 60.2% of trips, while trains and planes accounted for 19.2% and 15.2%, respectively.
