A recent drone attack has raised security concerns at Leipzig/Halle Airport, where Ukrainian Antonov Airlines has stationed several cargo planes for military transport amid ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Leipzig/Halle Airport, intended as a secure base for Ukrainian Antonov Airlines, became the target of a drone attack, highlighting vulnerabilities in airport security. The airport has served as a crucial hub for Antonov’s fleet since the escalation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, housing at least five An-124 cargo planes along with essential equipment and personnel.

The airport’s strategic importance has grown as a result of the ongoing conflict, with Antonov Airlines relocating operations from its home base in Hostomel, Ukraine. The relocation was initially planned for February 2022, but delays occurred due to the invasion, which saw Hostomel become one of the first targets for Russian forces. The airport was eventually recaptured by Ukrainian troops in early April 2022.
