El Salvador’s Radical Security Measures Spur Economic Revival
Under President Nayib Bukele’s leadership, El Salvador has transformed from one of Latin America’s most dangerous nations into a hub of renewed economic growth and investor confidence, driven by bold security policies and infrastructure investments.
President Nayib Bukele’s aggressive crackdown on gang violence has reshaped El Salvador’s social and economic landscape. Since imposing a state of emergency, his government has detained 90,000 individuals linked to organized crime, significantly reducing violence in areas once dominated by notorious Mara-Gangs. While human rights organizations have raised concerns about potential wrongful arrests, surveys show overwhelming public support for Bukele, whose approval rating stands at nearly 80 percent.
The improved security climate has sparked economic revitalization. Private investments rose by an impressive 23 percent last year, complemented by a 22 percent increase in public investment. Key sectors exhibited growth, with GDP accelerating to 4.8 percent in the first quarter of 2026. A new hospital in the capital, San Salvador, costing $61 million, offers free treatments for critical conditions, signifying progress in social infrastructure. Meanwhile, urban rejuvenation projects, partly funded by international partners, have transformed once-dangerous areas into modern civic spaces, attracting families and fostering community life.
Vice President Félix Ulloa credits the economic rebound to the government’s comprehensive territorial control strategy, aimed at eliminating gang-related activities. A U.S.-supported analysis previously revealed that criminal activities had cost the nation about 10.5 percent of its GDP. With these drastic reforms delivering tangible results, El Salvador is now positioned as one of the safest and fastest-growing countries in the region, drawing international investment and reshaping its global image.
