EU Commission Proposes New Rules for New Cars Emissions
The EU Commission is expected to propose a relaxation of current regulations that prohibit new cars from emitting harmful carbon dioxide within the next decade. Reports indicate that manufacturers may only need to reduce CO2 emissions by 90% instead of the previously mandated 100%. This change could allow for the continued sale of certain hybrid vehicles. Economic advisor Schnitzer remarked that combustion engine technology lacks a long-term future, likening it to horse-drawn carriages. Meanwhile, SPD deputy leader Limbacher described the anticipated compromise as a sensible bridge between present and future, providing the struggling industry with necessary breathing room while expecting a commitment to maintaining operations in Germany.
