EU Council Approves Relaxation of GMO Regulations
The Council of the European Union has ratified an agreement reached by EU member state negotiators and the European Parliament in December 2025 regarding genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
Eighteen countries voted in favor, six opposed, and three, including Germany, abstained. The European Parliament’s approval is anticipated as a formality due to the negotiated compromise. The new regulations will eliminate labeling requirements for products derived from certain genetically modified plants and will remove extensive environmental assessments prior to approval. However, stricter regulations will remain for products involving significant genetic alterations. Proponents argue this will lead to the development of new plant varieties that are more drought-resistant and require less fertilizer, while critics, including Environment Minister Schneider, have labeled the decision a serious error.
