Starting today, the European Union has introduced new packaging regulations aimed at significantly reducing waste and promoting recycling. These changes will impact both consumers and businesses across the region.

The European Union has launched a comprehensive initiative to enhance recycling efforts, with the goal of making all packaging recyclable by 2030, barring a few exceptions. This initiative is encapsulated in a new regulation that spans 124 pages and includes 71 articles, with the first changes taking effect immediately.

Among the new rules are stricter limits on PFAS, a group of synthetic chemicals that pose environmental and health risks, including potential links to cancer and liver damage. While these regulations are designed to protect consumers, the primary focus appears to be on businesses, which will face new responsibilities regarding packaging waste and information disclosure.

Critics from the business sector have expressed concerns over the complexity of the new regulations. Christoph Petri, a representative from the German Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the confusion among companies and suggested a pause in implementation to address legal ambiguities and the unfamiliarity many businesses have with these requirements. Additionally, the EU plans to ban oversized packaging for online orders and phase out certain packaging types, such as plastic ketchup packets and mini shampoo bottles, by 2030, further pushing the agenda for reduced packaging waste.
