EU Parliament Approves Deportation to Non-EU Countries
The European Parliament has voted to allow the deportation of asylum seekers to non-EU countries. Previously, deportation required that asylum seekers have a connection to a third country, such as family ties or a prolonged stay. Under the new proposal, deportation could occur if an agreement exists between an EU member state and the third country.
Additionally, the Parliament approved an EU-wide list of safe countries of origin. Among those proposed for inclusion are Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt. The decision now requires further negotiations between the Parliament representatives and member states to finalize the legal amendments.
