EU Parliament Supports Mechanism for Mercosur Agreement
The European Parliament in Strasbourg has backed a mechanism allowing the EU to reinstate tariffs on certain products, such as beef and sugar, if imports surge and drive down prices. Negotiations with the Council of the 27 EU member states are set to take place in the coming days, as EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen aims to sign the trade agreement with Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay on Saturday. France and other countries have expressed reservations, with French farmers planning protests against the agreement. The Mercosur deal, under negotiation for 25 years, aims to create the world's largest free trade zone, eliminating most tariffs between the regions.
