Chancellor Friedrich Merz has firmly rejected any coalition between his Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), accusing the party of jeopardizing national and international security.

In a recent televised interview, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reiterated his strong opposition to any form of cooperation between the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Alternative for Germany (AfD). Merz criticized the far-right party for its close ties to Russia, claiming that AfD representatives are frequent visitors to the Russian embassy in Berlin and maintain connections with President Vladimir Putin. He described the AfD’s platform, which includes leaving the European Union, Schengen Agreement, and the Eurozone, as a direct threat to Germany’s stability and its alliances.

Speaking ahead of the upcoming state elections in Saxony-Anhalt, Merz reaffirmed his commitment to regaining the trust of voters who have turned to the AfD. He emphasized that fundamental differences between the CDU and AfD make compromises impossible. “The AfD aims to destroy the CDU and dismantle Germany’s political system,” Merz stated. He also noted the potential challenges in government formation after the elections, referencing similar scenarios in other states where minority governments had to govern without AfD involvement.

On another issue, Merz addressed the recent discovery of an explosives-laden drone at Leipzig Airport. He confirmed that the federal government would soon identify those responsible and take appropriate action. Merz characterized the incident as a case of hybrid warfare, noting the absence of traditional military aggression but highlighting the threat posed by weaponized drones. The device was found near Ukrainian cargo planes at the airport, which serves as a hub for military aid shipments. Authorities are reportedly working on enhancing security measures to address evolving threats.
