German Finance Minister Klingbeil Proposes €1 Billion Annual Support for Indebted Municipalities

Finance Minister Christian Klingbeil (SPD) announced a relief package aimed at financially strained municipalities, set to be implemented from 2026 to 2029.

The federal government plans to allocate €250 million annually to assist financially weak states in alleviating municipal burdens. Additionally, €350 million per year will support East German states through increased federal contributions for supplementary pensions from the former GDR. A further €400 million is designated for adjustments in the state financial equalization system benefiting donor states. Leftist politician Görke criticized the proposal, asserting that it fails to break the cycle of municipal debt.
