On the second day of its retreat at Schloss Neuhardenberg, the German government focused on pivotal issues, including the escalating impacts of the climate crisis and pressing economic reforms. The coalition partners—the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Social Democratic Party (SPD), and Christian Social Union (CSU)—aim to address challenges such as extreme heat, drought, and economic competitiveness amid growing external pressures and internal disagreements.

Key figures in the government, including Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Vice-Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil, and Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, are expected to outline the outcomes of the discussions later in the day. Economic reform, particularly measures aimed at modernizing the country’s pension system and bolstering social security structures, has been a central topic. Finance Minister Klingbeil emphasized urgency, stating that concrete legislation implementing the recommendations from a government-appointed pension commission would be introduced this year.

As Germany approaches state elections in September, the coalition remains committed to accelerating its reform agenda amid political and economic pressures. Chancellor’s Office Chief Nina Warken expressed optimism about timely progress, highlighting plans for overhauling labor laws and the care insurance system.
