German Government Plans to Include Wolves in Hunting Law

The German federal government intends to amend hunting laws to allow easier culling of so-called problem wolves. This legislative change aims to enable states to better control the wolf population. Hunting would be permitted in specific areas, such as alpine pastures or dikes, to protect livestock. Financial support for preventive measures, including fences and guard dogs, will continue to be provided. However, environmentalists have expressed criticism of the proposed amendments concerning the potential shooting of wolves.

According to the draft legislation, about 1,100 incidents occurred last year where wolves attacked or injured roughly 4,300 farm animals. The federal documentation and advisory center reports that more than 1,600 wolves have repopulated parts of Germany, particularly in the northeast. The government’s initiative reflects ongoing challenges in balancing wildlife conservation with agricultural interests.
