In a solemn ceremony marking the 65th anniversary of the Berlin Wall’s construction, German leaders emphasized the importance of remembering the nation’s divided past and warned against historical amnesia.

The central commemoration took place at Bernauer Straße in Berlin, where approximately 120 attendees, including prominent politicians and cultural figures, gathered to honor the victims of the German division. Bundestag President Julia Klöckner and Berlin’s Mayor Kai Wegner were among the notable figures present, reflecting on the lasting impact of the Wall on German society.

Klöckner highlighted the fading visibility of the former border, yet stressed its enduring influence on contemporary political discourse. She urged citizens to learn from history, noting that the Wall’s legacy continues to shape discussions on migration, public health, and international relations. The Bundestag President called for greater dialogue among Germans to bridge divides that still linger in society.

Cultural State Minister Wolfram Weimer warned against trivializing the oppressive nature of the former East German regime, emphasizing that it was a brutal dictatorship marked by a lack of freedoms. He advocated for ongoing remembrance of the DDR’s victims, asserting that as eyewitnesses pass away, memorial sites become increasingly vital to preserving history. Chancellor Friedrich Merz echoed the sentiment, reminding citizens that freedom and democracy require constant vigilance and effort.
