Greens and CDU Initiate Coalition Talks in Baden-Württemberg

News Brief: Following the recent state election, the Greens and CDU are reportedly discussing the possibility of continuing their coalition in Baden-Württemberg, amid a rare power-sharing scenario.
Ten days after the Baden-Württemberg state election, discussions between the Greens and the CDU regarding exploratory talks for a new government formation are emerging. Both parties, which have governed together since 2016, have not confirmed the talks. In the March 8 election, the Greens secured 30.2% of the vote, closely followed by the CDU at 29.7%, resulting in an unusual deadlock with each party holding 56 seats in the new parliament. CDU leader Manuel Hagel emphasized that a mere extension of the existing coalition is not an option, while Green leader Cem Özdemir has called for a ‘partnership on equal terms.’ If exploratory talks yield positive results, formal coalition negotiations will follow, potentially culminating in a detailed agreement on shared policy goals for the next five years. Coalition negotiations can take weeks or months to finalize.
