ICC Rejects Israel’s Appeal Against Gaza War Investigations
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has dismissed Israel’s appeal against ongoing investigations into potential war crimes in the Gaza Strip. According to court documents, existing arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant will remain in place, allowing the investigations to proceed. The case has been active since May 2018, following a referral from Palestinian authorities concerning alleged past, present, and future crimes.
Israel contested the court’s jurisdiction, especially after the events of October 7, 2023, claiming a new situation had arisen that should affect the proceedings. However, the ICC judges rejected this argument. Notably, Israel does not recognize the ICC’s authority and has denied its jurisdiction throughout the process. The decision to continue the investigation marks a significant development in this longstanding legal matter.
