Israel Officially Recognizes Somaliland as Sovereign State

Israel has become the first country to officially recognize Somaliland as a sovereign state. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi signed a document establishing full diplomatic relations between the two entities. This recognition aligns with the spirit of the Abraham Accords, agreements initiated during the first term of U.S. President Donald Trump that led to normalized ties between Israel and several Arab nations. Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991 amid civil war, borders Djibouti and Ethiopia. The decision has been met with opposition from Turkey, Egypt, Djibouti, and Somalia. Turkey accused Israel of interfering in Somalia’s internal affairs, while Egypt warned of dangerous developments in the Horn of Africa resulting from the recognition. Somaliland’s status remains contested internationally, but this step marks a significant political move in the region.
