Israeli Defense Minister Plans Settlement in Northern Gaza
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz spoke about settling the northern Gaza Strip, clearly opposing the US peace plan that envisions a phased withdrawal of Israeli troops from the coastal area.
At an event in the occupied West Bank, Katz said that, “with God’s help, when the time comes,” settlement cores would be established in northern Gaza at the sites of Israeli settlements evacuated 20 years ago, adding that this would be done “in the right way and at the right time.”
Katz also referred to a “great revolution” in the West Bank, where Israel recently decided to create additional settlements. Internationally, Israeli settlements in areas claimed by Palestinians as part of a future state are considered illegal and an obstacle to peace.
In August, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel has no intention to occupy or resettle the Gaza Strip.
