Israel’s President to Visit Australia Soon After Sydney Attack
Following the attack on a Jewish festival in Sydney, Israel’s President Yitzhak Herzog has accepted an invitation to visit Australia.
A spokesperson for Herzog stated that he will undertake the trip “as soon as possible,” and that the invitation came from Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Albanese expressed “deep shock over the terrorist attack against the Jewish community in Australia” and “great sympathy for the numerous victims.”
Herzog said in the phone call that it is important to implement “all necessary legal measures” to counter the dangerous and unprecedented rise in antisemitism, extremism, and jihadist terror.
Earlier, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar called on Jews in Western countries to immigrate to Israel, noting that Jews worldwide are being hunted.
The attack occurred on December 14 during the Jewish Festival of Lights at the famous Bondi Beach in Sydney, resulting in 15 deaths.
The father who carried out the attack was shot dead by police, while his son was injured, hospitalized, and later transferred to prison. Authorities believe the attack was meticulously planned over months and influenced by the ideology of the Islamic State (IS).
