Italy is grappling with record-breaking heatwaves and widespread drought, causing significant challenges for cities, rural areas, and the wine industry.

This summer has brought relentless heatwaves to Italy, pushing temperatures to unprecedented levels and leaving the country struggling to cope. In Naples, ground temperatures recently soared to 48 degrees Celsius, while cities like Rome are enduring stifling heat and high humidity, creating sauna-like conditions. Even at night, urban areas remain oppressively warm, offering little relief to residents.

The impact of the extreme heat extends beyond the cities. Italy’s longest river, the Po, is experiencing alarmingly low water levels, and the Lago Maggiore, one of the country’s largest lakes, is nearing a historic low. Meanwhile, parts of the Adriatic Sea have recorded Mediterranean water temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, further highlighting the severity of the situation.

The heat has also disrupted Italy’s renowned wine industry. In the Franciacorta region, winemakers have been forced to begin harvesting grapes nearly ten days earlier than usual due to accelerated ripening caused by weeks of temperatures hovering around 37 to 38 degrees Celsius. Producers are racing against time to preserve the quality of their crops, with some starting the harvest as early as 4 a.m. under artificial lighting. The ongoing climate challenges are forcing the industry to adapt quickly to safeguard future vintages.
