Left Party Unveils Election Plan, Rejects Alliance with Conservatives

Ahead of state elections in Saxony-Anhalt, the Left Party has released a nine-point program focused on economic development and social welfare. Party leaders dismissed potential collaboration with the CDU while vowing to block extremist influence in the region.

The Left Party in Saxony-Anhalt has outlined a comprehensive nine-point program to address key societal issues ahead of the upcoming state elections on September 6. Central to their platform is the establishment of a regional development fund for bolstering the economy and improving infrastructure. Additional priorities include advocating for the reintroduction of a wealth tax, increasing state oversight in early childhood education, school social work, and healthcare services.

Party leaders took aim at their political rivals, with a particular focus on the rising influence of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), which is currently leading in regional polls. Dismissing nostalgic rhetoric and outdated policies, the Left Party emphasized the need for forward-looking solutions. They also criticized the AfD’s claims of impending governmental dominance, with its leaders expressing confidence in securing an absolute majority.

Addressing potential post-election alliances, Left Party candidate Eva von Angern ruled out unconditional cooperation with the Christian Democrats (CDU). Declaring that the Left Party would not serve as a subordinate force, she stressed that they represent a distinctly different vision for the state. She further underlined the party’s commitment to preventing Saxony-Anhalt from becoming a testing ground for extremist ideologies, signaling their readiness to actively counter the AfD’s attempts to gain power.
