Magdeburg Commemorates Victims of Christmas Market Attack One Year Later
One year after a man from Saudi Arabia deliberately drove a car into the Christmas market in Magdeburg on December 20, six people were killed and over 300 injured in the attack. Today, Magdeburg holds an ecumenical service near the attack site in the Johanniskirche to honor the victims. A memorial event is also planned for the evening, attended by invited guests including German Chancellor Merz, Saxony-Anhalt Minister President Haseloff, and Magdeburg’s Mayor Borris. Following the service, a candlelight vigil around the Alten Markt is scheduled. Authorities report the attacker had connections to Islamophobic and far-right circles and adhered to conspiracy theories while also facing mental health issues. The trial against the perpetrator is currently ongoing.
